Photoshop Quick Tip: The Pen is Mightier than the... Lasso!

This is the first in a new series that I want to start up on the site. I have learned some tips and tricks for Photoshop over the years and I want to share you all. To start, I’ll let you know why using the Pen tool for selections is far superior to using the Lasso tool.

Tracing with the Lasso tool, while very useful, doesn’t give you the flexibility that tracing with a vector path. Being able to fine tune your selection before you commit is extremely  helpful and can save you both time and many headaches.

Let's Begin

After selecting the Pen tool, make sure you have Paths selected in the toolbar. With Paths selected you wont create a shape with a fill, just it’s outline.

You then start clicking around the area that you want selected. One of the flexibilities that vector paths created by the pen provide over the Lasso tool is bezier curves. To create one, click and hold  while you drag out the point.

You can even go back and tweak you path after you have finished outlining. You can do this by moving the anchor points around with the Path Selection tool.

When all of you points are in place and your path outlines the shape you want, select the Path Selection Tool then right click on your path. Select “Make Selection” on the popup menu and your path should now be a selection.

Conclusion

That is all. This is a great technique for setting up flats before you color you piece and will definitely speed up the coloring process. Just fill with your favorite color while the item is still selected and you have yourself a flat!
